Daniel Hernandez Jr., 20, was out on bond when troopers tried to stop a Camaro in Bexar County.
SAN ANTONIO, TX — A 20-year-old Poteet man already charged in a murder case was arrested June 4 after authorities said he led troopers on a high-speed chase through Bexar County.
Daniel Hernandez Jr. was booked on a charge of evading arrest with a motor vehicle after the pursuit, which began during a traffic stop attempt near Bandera Road and Interstate 410. The arrest drew new attention because Hernandez was out on bond in a pending murder case tied to the death of an 18-year-old he was accused of killing in 2024.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said the chase began around 9:30 a.m. Thursday when troopers tried to stop a white 2021 Chevrolet Camaro for a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, the driver sped away, authorities said. The Camaro traveled on Interstate 410 and then onto back roads as the pursuit crossed parts of Bexar County. Officials said the car topped 100 mph before the chase ended near Old Pearsall Road and Five Palms Drive. Hernandez was taken into custody after the vehicle pulled over. No injuries were reported in the available public accounts.
Authorities identified Hernandez as the driver and said he was charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle, a felony in Texas. Public reports said Hernandez was from Poteet, a city south of San Antonio in Atascosa County. The exact traffic violation that led troopers to attempt the stop was not detailed in the initial reports. Officials also did not say whether other people were inside the Camaro, whether weapons were found or whether the chase caused any crashes. Those details remained unknown after the arrest.
Hernandez’s arrest came while he was out on bond in a separate murder case. He had previously been arrested by Bexar County deputies in April 2024 and accused of killing his best friend, who was 18. The victim’s father later spoke publicly after Hernandez’s new arrest, saying, “That was his best friend.” The murder case had not been resolved when the June 4 chase occurred. The new arrest added another felony allegation while Hernandez was awaiting further court action in the earlier case.
After the pursuit arrest, a judge raised Hernandez’s bond to $300,000 and added a condition of full house arrest if he is released, according to public reports. The bond change shifted the case from a traffic-stop pursuit into a broader court question about release conditions for a defendant already facing a serious charge. Hernandez is presumed innocent unless convicted. Court records and future hearings are expected to determine how the new evading charge affects his release status and the pending murder case.
The chase moved through busy parts of Bexar County during the morning, beginning near a major highway interchange and ending on the Southwest Side. The route included Interstate 410, one of the San Antonio area’s main loops, and roads near residential and commercial areas. Local coverage showed law enforcement focused on the speed of the pursuit and the fact that Hernandez stopped before the arrest. Officials did not release a full pursuit map or dash-camera footage in the first public accounts.
Hernandez remained under court supervision following the new arrest, with the evading charge pending alongside the earlier murder case. The next milestone is expected in court, where prosecutors and defense attorneys will address bond conditions, custody status and scheduling for both cases.
