Florida Senior Killed Near School Hours Before Graduation

Christopher Brooks, 18, died in a crash near South Fork High School while heading to graduation practice.

MARTIN COUNTY, FL — An 18-year-old South Fork High School senior died Thursday morning in a crash near the school entrance while driving to graduation practice, hours before he was set to receive his diploma, authorities and school officials said.

Authorities identified the student as Christopher Brooks of Hobe Sound. The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. May 21 near Southwest Pratt Whitney Road and Southwest Bulldog Way, close to the Stuart campus. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Brooks was driving a Honda toward South Fork High School when he struck the back of a dump truck that had stopped in traffic. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Budensiek said Brooks was headed to graduation practice when the crash happened outside the school gate. Deputies and emergency crews responded after a call about a fatal crash near the campus entrance. “Clearly there was some type of a distraction, but we don’t know what that distraction was,” Budensiek said during a briefing at the crash scene. Officials said Brooks failed to slow for stopped traffic before the collision. Investigators had not said whether speed, a phone, seat belt use or any other factor had been confirmed.

The crash sent shock through South Fork High School on a day planned around commencement. Martin County School District Chief of Staff Jennifer DeShazo said the district and school community were facing an “unfathomable tragedy.” She said Brooks had been driving to graduation practice when he was killed in a motor vehicle crash just outside the school gate. The senior class was scheduled to graduate later that evening. District officials said Brooks was a South Fork senior and had attended Martin County schools since kindergarten.

Brooks was known across several parts of the school and Hobe Sound community. School officials said he had attended Hobe Sound Elementary School and Murray Middle School before South Fork. He was involved in the school’s bowling team and veterinary program. DeShazo said those ties made the loss hit many parts of the district. “He was involved in sports at the school. He was involved in the veterinary program, and it’s just a heartbreaking situation,” she said. Friends and community members described him as kind, funny and easy to be around.

One of Brooks’ friends was among the first people to reach the crash scene after seeing smoke near the school entrance, Budensiek said. The sheriff said the friend did not see the crash itself but came upon the wreck moments afterward. “They ran up and saw what no one should see,” Budensiek said. A woman who was waiting at a red light with her daughter near the school told local reporters she heard a loud impact, then saw smoke and people running toward the crash. Brooks’ grandparents also were at the scene, officials said.

South Fork High School held its graduation ceremony that night as students, families and staff mourned Brooks. School leaders honored him with an empty chair holding a cap and gown, flowers, notes and other items. Principal Jaime Thompson addressed the loss during the ceremony, telling those gathered that there were no perfect words for the grief felt by the class and school community. Students also paused for prayer and remembrance during the commencement. Classmates said Brooks would remain part of the Class of 2026.

The loss was also felt at First United Methodist Church in Hobe Sound, where Brooks had been part of a youth group for years. Church members gathered after his death, and friends shared memories of him as someone who made others feel welcome. One friend said Brooks was “a friend to everyone.” Youth leaders said he had grown up in the church community and was a regular presence there. The remembrances added to a wider picture of a student whose death reached beyond the school campus.

The Florida Highway Patrol continued its investigation after the crash, with no final findings released on the cause. Officials had not announced charges or a completed crash report as of Sunday. South Fork High School and Martin County school leaders continued to support students and staff after a graduation day marked by both ceremony and loss.
