Chad Eberle remains jailed in Saltillo as Mexican authorities pursue charges stemming from an Aug. 4 attack that left three people dead.
SALTILLO, MEXICO — A former Bexar County Precinct 2 deputy constable and Texas police officer is being held in northern Mexico after authorities accused him of killing three members of his former partner’s family and critically injuring her before fleeing toward the U.S. border with their young son.
Mexican prosecutors accuse Chad Eberle of carrying out the Aug. 4 attack at a home in Saltillo, the capital of Coahuila state. Authorities arrested him near the border in Piedras Negras as he allegedly tried to reach Texas with his 3-year-old son. A judge later ordered Eberle held in preventive detention while the criminal case moves forward. His next court hearing was scheduled for Aug. 11.
The three people killed were identified in Mexican and Texas news reports as Ana Laura de León Morín, 44; Laura Jaquelín Morín de León, 22; and Emanuel Montero Gómez, 44. Eberle’s former partner, identified in Mexican reports as Litzy, was seriously wounded and remained hospitalized in critical condition. Prosecutors have said the case grew out of a troubled relationship and a dispute involving the couple’s child.
Prosecutors told a judge during an Aug. 6 hearing that Eberle is accused of two counts of femicide and one count of qualified homicide in connection with the three deaths. The allegations against him remain unproven, and the case is proceeding through the Mexican court system. Mexican authorities have not released a final account establishing every circumstance that led to the attack.
According to evidence described by prosecutors during the hearing, Eberle and Litzy met in Texas in 2022 and later married. They had a son in 2023. Investigators said the relationship was later marked by allegations of family violence and that a restriction had been issued limiting Eberle’s contact with Litzy. Recent reporting from the court hearing also said prosecutors alleged restrictions involving his access to firearms had been imposed in the United States.
Mexican authorities said Litzy traveled to Saltillo in late July to stay with relatives. Eberle accompanied her in a Chevrolet Silverado. Prosecutors said tensions between the two escalated before the Aug. 4 attack. Relatives lost contact with the family that afternoon, and a neighbor later entered the home and found three people dead and Litzy critically wounded. Eberle, the child and the Silverado were gone, according to the prosecution’s account presented in court.
Authorities launched a search that extended north toward the Texas border. Eberle was detained in Piedras Negras before crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, officials said. The child was found unharmed and placed under the care of Coahuila child-protection authorities. Eberle was later transferred back to Saltillo and booked into the city’s men’s penitentiary under an arrest warrant.
Eberle previously worked for several law enforcement agencies in Texas. State licensing records reviewed by Texas news organizations show that he served as a Bexar County Precinct 2 deputy constable from January 2019 to January 2020. He also worked for the Northside Independent School District Police Department and police agencies in Somerset, Marble Falls, Gregory, Lockney and Bangs. Records and former department posts also identify him as an Army veteran.
At the time of his arrest, Eberle was associated with the Santa Anna Police Department in Central Texas. Police Chief Ryan Tucker told KSAT and other news organizations that Eberle was an unpaid reserve officer who had been on personal leave. Tucker said the department had been in contact with the U.S. Consulate in Mexico and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement following the arrest.
The case has also raised questions about how Eberle allegedly entered Mexico while subject to a U.S. restraining order. During the court proceedings, Coahuila prosecutors alleged that he brought a .45-caliber firearm into Mexico and said no inspection had been documented that detected either the weapon or the U.S. restriction. Those claims remain part of the prosecution’s developing case and have not been established at trial.
Eberle remains in custody in Saltillo under preventive detention. His defense requested additional time before the court decides whether there is sufficient evidence to formally continue the prosecution, resulting in an Aug. 11 hearing date. Coahuila authorities continue investigating the shooting, the weapon allegedly used and the circumstances surrounding the family dispute.
