Four Killed, 15 Injured in Deep Ellum Shootings

Dallas police are investigating three shootings that unfolded across the crowded entertainment district within about 75 minutes early Sunday.

DALLAS, TX — Four people were killed and 15 others were injured in three shootings across the Deep Ellum entertainment district early Sunday as large Halloween weekend crowds filled the neighborhood, Dallas police said.

The shootings occurred at about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street and 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, according to a preliminary Dallas Police Department account. Police said 19 people were identified as victims across the three scenes, with four pronounced dead and 15 injured. Several of the injured people reached hospitals without being transported by emergency crews, making the casualty count fluid during the early stages of the investigation.

Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators were still working Sunday morning to determine what led to the shootings and whether any of the incidents were connected. Police initially described them as three separate scenes spread across the Deep Ellum area. No officers were injured. Authorities had not publicly identified the people who were killed or released detailed information about the conditions of those who survived.

The violence unfolded over roughly 75 minutes in one of Dallas’ busiest nightlife districts. Crowds had gathered in Deep Ellum for Halloween celebrations on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Comeaux said the department had anticipated a large turnout and placed additional officers in the area. In at least one instance, officers were close enough to hear gunfire and move quickly toward the scene, he said.

Comeaux said during a morning briefing that police had arrested and were interviewing some individuals as detectives tried to determine how, or whether, they were connected to the shootings. A later preliminary department statement said suspects remained outstanding. Police had not announced formal charges or clearly established how many people were being held in connection with the violence, leaving the status of possible suspects unsettled as the investigation continued.

Investigators were processing multiple crime scenes, interviewing witnesses and seeking surveillance recordings from businesses and cameras throughout the district. Police said the wide area involved made the investigation especially complex. Several streets were closed while officers collected evidence and worked to separate information tied to each shooting.

Early reports varied on the number of people wounded. Initial accounts said at least five people had been injured, but police later placed the number at 15 as more victims arrived at hospitals or were connected to the incidents. Authorities said the updated count included victims from all three shooting scenes.

The shootings add to a series of violent incidents reported in Deep Ellum this year. In May, a security guard was killed and five other people were wounded in two shootings that authorities said were unrelated. Other shootings were reported in the entertainment district during the summer, including incidents in July and August. Sunday’s investigation, however, remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the three shootings that occurred overnight.

Police had not released a motive for any of the shootings by Sunday morning, and investigators had not established publicly whether the three incidents were related. Detectives were continuing to review evidence, question witnesses and determine who was responsible as authorities worked through the three separate scenes.
