LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH – A 43-year-old grandmother from Ohio, Mia Desiree Harris, confessed to intentionally shooting her 6-month-old grandchild while she was asleep. Harris’ confession regarding the violent incident revealed a level of nonchalance as she stated that she was “sorry, not sorry.”
According to court documents, Harris used a 9-millimeter pistol to fire multiple shots through the wooden door of the baby girl’s bedroom in December 2023. She subsequently broke down the door and shot the baby in her eye.
Recorded details of the incident also mentioned two other assaults carried out by Harris. She reportedly tried to shoot one individual in the head at point-blank range but missed, and landed a punch in the face of another person before shooting at the baby.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said the brutal episode happened amidst a family argument in their home in Liberty Township. Harris showed no remorse for her actions, dismissing the infant as “not my grandbaby” when asked by the deputies about her reasons for the violent act.
The events of the day were also underscored by the apparent family resentment that Harris harbored. She accused her family members of duplicity, believing they intended to take all her money and abandon her. Detective Daniel Turner further mentioned that Harris had expressed a desire to “crucify” her family.
Harris pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge related to the shooting incident on Tuesday. The court dismissed additional charges linked to the other assaults made on family members in exchange for her plea.
The baby girl, named Myra, survived the horrifying ordeal and showed a remarkable recovery. Police response to the incident was swift, getting to the family residence at around 1:50 a.m., following a distressed call from Myra’s mother. Myra was rushed to a local hospital, where she underwent two surgeries.
The grandmother fled the crime scene soon after but was captured promptly after witnesses identified her as the shooter. Harris is currently held at the Butler County Jail, facing a 15-year prison sentence with her judgement expected to be given on Oct. 29.
