Husband and wife stabbed by man they had a restraining order against

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – A community is reeling after a tragic incident in Arroyo Grande left one woman dead and her husband injured. The suspect’s mental health is now under scrutiny as the investigation unfolds.

Fritz Schnor, accused of fatally stabbing Cynthia Giabalvo and injuring her husband Joseph, made his initial court appearance this week. Cynthia had lived in the quiet neighborhood on Victoria Way for four decades before the shocking events that led to her death.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office reported that Schnor broke into the Giabalvo home, attacking the couple as they slept. Cynthia succumbed to her injuries, while Joseph is recovering at home. Their daughter, Laura, expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support during this difficult time.

Court documents reveal Schnor’s extensive criminal history, with offenses dating back to 2017. Notably, he had previously targeted the Giabalvo residence, located just across the street from his own parents’ home. The family had long feared for their safety, securing a restraining order and increasing security measures around their property.

Neighbors described Schnor as increasingly erratic, raising his fence and creating barriers around his driveway to isolate himself. Concerns about his mental health have surfaced, with a judge questioning his ability to comprehend the charges against him. District Attorney Dan Dowd confirmed efforts are underway to explore Schnor’s mental health background and any potential illnesses that may have influenced his actions.

Laura Giabalvo emphasized her family’s determination to seek justice for Cynthia. They intend to push for changes in restraining order policies to ensure victims are informed and protected, especially when an order is granted without their knowledge.

Schnor is scheduled to return to court on November 21st, where further evaluations of his mental state are expected.
