Las Vegas Police Kill Armed Man After Traffic Shooting

Metro police said the man fired into traffic, then shot toward officers near Lake Mead and Sloan.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Las Vegas police shot and killed an armed man Wednesday after callers reported he was firing into traffic near North Sloan Lane and East Lake Mead Boulevard, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

The shooting marked Metro’s sixth officer-involved shooting of 2026 and brought a large police response to the east valley intersection. Police said no officers were injured. The man’s name had not been released as of Thursday, and investigators said the case remains open.

Metro said dispatchers received multiple reports at about 12:25 p.m. June 3 of a man with a gun firing into traffic near the intersection. Officers arrived and found an adult male armed with a firearm, police said. The department said the man refused commands to drop the gun, pointed it at officers and fired one shot toward them. Officers then returned fire, striking him. Capt. Adam Seely provided the department’s media statement after the shooting, and Metro said the information released was preliminary.

After the gunfire, police said the man was taken into custody while officers gave medical aid. Medical personnel later pronounced him dead at the scene. Police did not report any injuries to drivers, bystanders or officers. The department had not released the number of officers who fired, the number of rounds fired by police or the man’s age. Metro also had not said whether any vehicles were hit before officers arrived.

The shooting happened in the east Las Vegas Valley, near a busy road corridor that connects neighborhoods, schools, parks and businesses. News 3 reported that police asked the public to avoid the area because of the large police presence. The nearby Bob Price Recreation Center closed to the public for the rest of Wednesday, and its programming for the day was canceled. The center said operations were likely to resume Thursday.

Metro said the identity of the officer involved would be released after 48 hours under department policy. The department’s Force Investigation Team is handling the investigation. The shooting will also move through Metro’s officer-involved shooting review process, which typically includes evidence review, interviews and public release of more details after investigators complete early steps.

The department listed the case as LLV260600009768 and identified the public information release as PO 084 06-03-26. Police said the first reports came from people who described a man firing into traffic, a detail that shaped the initial response. As of Thursday, police had not released body-camera video, 911 audio or the man’s identity. The motive for the reported gunfire was also unknown.

The scene near Lake Mead and Sloan had cleared from the first emergency response by Thursday, but the investigation was still active. The next expected public update is the release of the involved officer’s name after the 48-hour period required by Metro policy.
