ORMOND BEACH, FL – As Paul Holub settled in for a nap in his serene riverside home, the last thing he expected was a bolt of lightning to crash through his ceiling. Without warning, the midday peace was shattered, leaving him amidst a pile of debris and facing a near heart-stopping moment.
Holub took a moment to show the aftermath, a gaping hole where his ceiling once was. The lightning strike had transformed his bedroom into an unintended skylight, scattering ceiling fragments and roof tiles around him. “I didn’t hear the bang everyone else did,” he recounted. “I just woke up covered in debris.”
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on a seemingly tranquil Monday. Despite the clear skies and sunshine over the Halifax River, the lightning strike came as a complete surprise. “I didn’t think of a lightning strike,” Holub said. “I thought maybe it was an airplane accident.”
At the time, Holub was trying to recover from mild food poisoning. The sudden destruction left him buried under sheetrock, lumber, and roof tiles, some weighing up to 20 pounds each. Fortunately, the sheetrock absorbed much of the impact, sparing him from more serious injury.
His family quickly came to his aid, helping him dig out from the wreckage. The damage was extensive, with electronics fried and debris scattered around the pool deck. Yet, amid the chaos, Holub felt a profound sense of gratitude. “I feel lucky to be alive,” he admitted, relieved to be picking up pieces of his house rather than his life.
Now, as he surveys the damage, Holub is left to contemplate the fragility of life and the unexpected twists it can take. The bizarre event has left a lasting impression, one that he shares with a mix of disbelief and gratitude.
