Police detained a person of interest after witnesses reported that a suspect demanded money from the man before gunfire erupted.
HOUSTON, TX — A man was shot and killed early Wednesday while offering food to people outside a hotel along South Highway 6, where police said a suspect approached his vehicle and demanded money before witnesses heard gunfire.
Houston police said officers responded to a shooting at 2130 South Highway 6 at about 2:20 a.m. Sept. 30. Officers found the man on the ground with a gunshot wound and a Chevrolet Tahoe that had crashed through a wooden fence along the side of the parking lot. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The man’s identity had not been released as of Wednesday pending notification of his family by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Police have not announced charges in connection with the killing, and investigators have not publicly identified the person they detained after the shooting.
Witnesses told investigators that the victim had been driving the Tahoe and was offering food to people in the area when a suspect approached the passenger side of the vehicle and demanded money, according to the Houston Police Department. One witness told investigators she walked away after the demand was made. A short time later, she heard gunshots and then heard the Tahoe crash into the fence.
Other witnesses also reported hearing gunfire and the crash before seeing a suspect flee from the vehicle, police said. They provided officers with a description of the person who left the scene. Police did not release a detailed suspect description in their written update.
Houston Police Patrol Support Team officers who were nearby located a person of interest matching the description provided by witnesses, according to the department. Officers detained and questioned the man. Police said he was later booked into the Harris County Jail on a separate offense. Authorities did not identify that offense or say that the man had been charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
Local news reports citing police described investigators as examining a possible robbery or carjacking. FOX 26 Houston reported that police said the victim tried to drive away after the encounter and was shot before his vehicle crashed into the fence. The Houston Police Department’s later written statement confirmed that a suspect demanded money but did not characterize the shooting as a confirmed carjacking.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation by the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division. Police have not publicly established a motive beyond the witness account that the suspect demanded money, and authorities have not said whether investigators recovered a weapon or other evidence linking the detained person to the shooting.
Investigators are continuing to gather information about the killing. The victim’s name remained withheld pending family notification, and Houston police had not announced any homicide charge in the case in their latest public update.
