Man missing for 10 years found at bottom of lake

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – For over a decade, the McConnell family lived in uncertainty, clinging to hope while fearing the worst. This week, their long wait ended with the discovery of their loved one, Stephen McConnell, whose remains and car were found submerged in a Boca Raton lake.

Stephen’s brother, Kevin McConnell, shared his feelings of loss and remembrance. “I see him all the time in my dreams,” Kevin said, reflecting on the close bond they shared growing up just a year apart.

Stephen vanished during the summer of 2015, last seen at a gas station on West Sample Road. His sudden disappearance left the family devastated, and his car was missing as well. For years, questions lingered until a call from Kevin’s mother changed everything. At 4 a.m. last Friday, she informed Kevin that Stephen’s remains had been found.

The emotional discovery left Kevin in a state of shock. “I’d stare at the wall for ten, fifteen minutes, just without moving a muscle,” he recalled. Yet, amid the grief, there was a sense of closure as ten years of uncertainty began to resolve.

Assistance from Sunshine State Sonar, a private diving company, was instrumental in locating Stephen’s car. Kevin expressed deep gratitude for their relentless efforts. “I tear up thinking about it. People like that just want to help without asking for anything in return,” he said.

The medical examiner confirmed Stephen’s identity through dental records. However, the circumstances of how he ended up in the lake remain a mystery. The Fort Lauderdale police continue to investigate the case, seeking answers for the McConnell family.

While the confirmation of Stephen’s death brings some closure, many questions remain unanswered. The family is left to wonder how he ended up in the lake and what led to his death.
