LOUISVILLE, KY – A man is fighting for his life in hospital after reportedly shooting himself during a police stop in a parking lot at Mall St. Matthews on Saturday. The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) is now actively investigating the incident.
The episode unfolded when two off-duty officers, one in an LMPD-marked vehicle and the other in an unmarked car. They were both dressed in LMPD uniforms as they pulled over a vehicle in the mall parking lot on Shelbyville Road.
During the stop, a man sitting in the passenger seat suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The unidentified man was promptly transported to the University of Louisville Hospital. He is currently listed in critical condition.
The vehicle’s two other occupants, including the driver, were unscathed and are reportedly cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
According to Lt. Col. Emily McKinley of the LMPD, the department’s public integrity unit is handling the investigation given that the incident occurred during a police operation. She also mentioned that body-worn camera footage was available and would be released publicly at a later date.
The reason for the police stop has not been disclosed as of yet and no arrests or charges have been made in relation to the incident.
