Police say the 24-year-old employee had sexual contact with a 67-year-old dementia patient at two Rockwall care facilities.
ROCKWALL, TX — A memory care worker faces four counts of aggravated sexual assault after police alleged he had sexual encounters with a 67-year-old woman with dementia while she lived at two care facilities in Rockwall.
Zachary Daylon Yoakum, 24, was arrested Aug. 15 and booked into the Rockwall County Jail, according to police and reports citing an arrest affidavit. Each aggravated sexual assault charge is a first-degree felony. Authorities allege three encounters happened at Village Green Memory Care Community Center, where Yoakum worked, and another occurred after the woman moved to Rock Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care. The allegations have not been proven in court.
The investigation began after family members contacted Rockwall police Aug. 13 with concerns about a suspected relationship between Yoakum and the woman. Police said investigators developed probable cause to believe sexual encounters occurred at both facilities. The woman’s name has not been released, and reports of the arrest affidavit say investigators used a pseudonym to protect her identity.
According to the affidavit as reported by local news organizations, the woman had been hospitalized in July and was later diagnosed with dementia. She was placed at Village Green, where Yoakum worked and was assigned to her care. Her daughter later discovered text messages and phone records involving her mother and Yoakum and became concerned about the contact between them.
The woman was transferred to Rock Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care on Aug. 10. The following day, an employee there contacted the woman’s daughter after a young man attempted to visit the resident, according to reports citing the affidavit. The visitor was identified as Yoakum, and the daughter asked that he leave. Reports said he later returned and was again asked to leave.
During the investigation, the woman told police that Yoakum had expressed love for her and discussed marriage, according to reports of the affidavit. Investigators alleged that he also gave her code words intended to conceal their contact. The affidavit states that the woman described four sexual encounters, but her dementia made it difficult for her to provide specific dates. Police placed the alleged incidents between Aug. 1 and Aug. 10.
Investigators allege three of the encounters occurred at Village Green and one occurred after the woman was transferred to Rock Ridge. One alleged incident involved inappropriate sexual contact in a garden area at a care facility, according to the affidavit. Reports also say the woman underwent a sexual assault examination, but results of that examination were not disclosed in the affidavit.
Yoakum was arrested two days after the family contacted police. Published reports say his bond was set at $400,000. Authorities have not announced the outcome of the case, and the criminal charges remain accusations. Yoakum is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Rockwall police have said the investigation remains active. No court date was identified in the initial reports reviewed, and authorities have not announced whether additional charges will be filed. Neither Village Green nor Rock Ridge had issued a public statement about the allegations in the reports reviewed.
