DETROIT, MI – A Detroit mom has landed in legal hot water following an incident involving her 3-year-old son, who reportedly found an unsecured firearm and shot himself in the head.
On September 6, the local police authorities were notified about a shooting incident at a residence located on the 11400 block of Saint Patrick Street. Upon arrival at the chaotic scene, they found the young boy suffering from an open gunshot wound to the head.
According to authorities, the bullet appeared to have grazed the boy’s face. He was rushed to the hospital, where he is reported to be stable.
Donell Hunt, a handyman working in the neighborhood, expressed his disappointment as well as his frustration over the incident. Hunt, whose only son passed away from cancer a few years ago, criticized the parents’ irresponsibility in leaving a firearm unsecured around children.
Pertaining to Michigan’s recent secure storage law, gun owners are obligated to ensure that firearms left unattended are unloaded, locked with a safety device, or stored in a locked box. These precautions promoting gun safety are deemed even more necessary in scenarios where it is reasonably assumed that a minor will be present on the premises.
