Mom of 2 killed in murder-suicide

SAMPSON COUNTY, NC – In a tragic turn of events, a mother of two lost her life in what local law enforcement are considering a murder-suicide case. The deceased, identified by loved ones as ToniAnn White, had reportedly apprised her son of ongoing dangerous family issues at home.

On the fateful Saturday night, White sent a grave warning to her 19-year-old son in the form of a text advising him against coming home due to her husband’s alarming behavior. The following morning, her son found the lifeless bodies of his mother and stepfather at their residence, marking a gruesome end to White’s life.

Joseph Salentin, her former spouse, is now publicly addressing her untimely demise. Salentin expressed grief that sufficient measures are not in place to protect victims, and advocated for greater availability of resources for organizations such as InterAct. InterAct is dedicated to aiding people in dire need of help due to domestic violence.

According to Salentin, White championed her role as a devoted mom, prioritizing the well-being of their sons over everything else. He stated, “She was a great mother. She was always there for her kids.”

Moreover, White reportedly faced continual abuse from her husband and attempted to take legal action by pressing charges only to later dismiss them by not appearing in court. “I think women and men, some are afraid to come forward. Some of them are afraid to say things,” said Salentin. “They need police to advocate for them.”

Salentin firmly believes that White was trying to escape the unhealthy and dangerous situation she found herself in. As a testament to her strength and resolve, he stated, “She wanted to get to a better place and be happy again.”

In dire circumstances, organizations like the Durham Crisis Response Center, InterAct of Wake County, and U Care, Inc. in Sampson County are willing to provide assistance, resources, shelters, and escape plans for individuals in need.
