Police are investigating after the woman said three women attacked her and her 4-week-old son on Detroit’s west side.
DETROIT, MI — A Detroit mother and her 4-week-old baby are recovering after the woman said three women ambushed and assaulted them outside a home on the city’s west side, leaving both with injuries and prompting a police investigation.
The mother, identified publicly only as “Taylor” to protect her privacy, told FOX 2 Detroit that she went to the home after people there said they wanted to see her newborn son. She said the encounter quickly turned violent. Detroit police were investigating the attack and preparing the case for review by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, according to the station’s report.
Taylor said she believes the women involved are relatives of the baby’s father. That relationship, along with other circumstances surrounding the confrontation, had not been independently confirmed. Authorities had not publicly announced charges or released the names of any suspects as of Sunday.
According to Taylor’s account, trouble began as she was handing over the baby’s car seat. She said one woman grabbed at it before the confrontation escalated. Taylor said three women then attacked her, describing the assault as a three-on-one beating. A portion of the incident was captured on video, FOX 2 reported.
During the confrontation, the newborn was thrown or knocked from a stroller and struck the ground, according to the mother’s account and the television report. The child suffered bruising and swelling around one eye. Taylor also suffered swelling and bruising to her face. The report said both mother and child received medical treatment and later returned home to recover.
Taylor told the station the beating lasted about 10 minutes. She had given birth by cesarean section only four weeks earlier, adding to concerns about her injuries. She chose not to show her face publicly because of the extent of the bruising. “We didn’t deserve this,” she said of herself and her son.
Detroit police told FOX 2 that investigators were working to complete the case for possible submission to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The television station reported that investigators were considering potential charges involving all three women, but prosecutors had not publicly announced charges in the case. Any charging decision would be made after authorities review the evidence.
Police also warned about social media posts connected to the case after the attack drew attention online. According to FOX 2, investigators and Taylor said a purported GoFundMe fundraiser claiming to benefit the mother and newborn was not authorized by her. Taylor told the station she had not created or requested such a fundraising page.
The precise date and location of the reported assault have not been publicly released in detail, and police have not disclosed a suspected motive. The investigation remained active, with the next significant development expected to be a decision on whether prosecutors will authorize criminal charges.
