Police charged Jenipher Lewis with child abuse and traffic offenses after a confrontation captured on video spread widely online.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A judge ordered Jenipher Lewis to remain jailed as her case moves to district court after Albuquerque police accused her of smashing a pickup truck window with a bat during a road-rage confrontation while her two young children were in her vehicle.
Lewis faces charges including child abuse, reckless driving and driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to police and local reporting. The case drew widespread attention after video of the confrontation near Wyoming Boulevard and Constitution Avenue circulated online. Prosecutors asked that Lewis remain detained while the criminal case proceeds, and a judge granted the request.
Police said the confrontation began before the portion captured in the widely shared video. Lewis told Albuquerque Police Department detectives that a white pickup truck pulled out in front of her vehicle, forcing her to swerve. She told investigators that she later pulled alongside the truck and yelled at the driver because she believed he had nearly caused a serious crash involving her and her children.
According to police, Lewis said the pickup driver laughed and challenged her during the confrontation. Video from the scene shows Lewis outside her vehicle with a bat and striking a window of the white pickup. Police allege her two children remained inside her vehicle during the encounter. The video then shows the pickup moving into Lewis’ vehicle before leaving the area.
Lewis told investigators she had been trying to protect herself and her children, according to KOB. Police also said she acknowledged that what she had done was wrong. Her statements are part of the investigation and do not establish the circumstances of the confrontation on their own. The other driver’s account had not been publicly established in the reports reviewed Saturday.
Police said Lewis also reported that the pickup driver rammed the rear of her vehicle at a traffic light while the children were sitting in the back seat. Authorities have continued trying to identify the driver of the white pickup, which did not appear to have a visible license plate in video of the encounter. No charges against that driver were reported in the sources reviewed.
Officers later interviewed Lewis’ children at their school, KOB reported. Police said the children told officers they were fine, and officers did not observe injuries. Investigators nevertheless filed the child abuse charge based on the circumstances they allege placed the children at risk during the confrontation. The filing represents an accusation, and Lewis has not been convicted of the charge.
During Lewis’ court appearance, prosecutors sought continued detention while the case moves forward. The judge said the state had filed a motion asking that Lewis be detained pending trial and signed an order transferring the matter to district court. KOB reported that the child abuse charge could carry a prison sentence of up to three years if Lewis is convicted.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office told KOB that additional charges could still be filed. Police were also still seeking the pickup driver as the investigation continued. No trial date or final resolution of the case had been reported as of Saturday.
