MILWAUKEE, WI – A dramatic escape attempt by a Milwaukee man has captured the attention of many, as video footage of his daring leap from a second-story window continues to circulate widely online. The man, identified as 24-year-old Martez Grandberry Jr., was apprehended by police following the high-stakes incident, which unfolded during a homicide investigation.
Authorities have charged Grandberry not with homicide, but with resisting an officer and two counts of bail jumping. These charges stem from the night he attempted to evade law enforcement by diving headfirst out of a window at an apartment complex, a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller.
The Milwaukee Police Department had been tracking Grandberry as part of their investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on January 26. On that night, a 64-year-old man was shot and killed near the intersection of 89th and Mill Road. Using fingerprints, officers were able to trace Grandberry to an apartment located at 45th and West Hampton.
According to court records, officers announced their presence and knocked on the door, but received no response. However, they observed someone peering out from the window for several hours. As tensions mounted, police called for Grandberry to surrender, forming a tactical unit to ensure his capture.
The situation escalated around 8:30 p.m. when Grandberry made his bold move. Video footage shows him launching himself from the window, attempting to flee the scene. Despite his efforts to dodge officers and slip under police tape, he was quickly subdued and placed in handcuffs amidst the chaos.
Following his arrest, prosecutors revealed that a search of the apartment yielded several items linking Grandberry to the scene, including a handgun. He remains in custody, facing charges related to previous incidents of recklessly endangering safety and operating a vehicle without a valid license.
While Grandberry was initially a suspect in the homicide case, authorities have yet to formally charge him in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to piece together evidence.
The viral video and subsequent arrest have sparked conversations about the lengths individuals will go to evade justice, as well as the challenges faced by law enforcement in apprehending suspects under pressure.
