COLUMBUS, OH – A tense encounter on the west side of Columbus on Sunday night ended with a police officer being injured and a suspect dead. The incident was linked to a separate shooting that took place at a local Amazon facility in West Jefferson, according to the Columbus police. The shooting occurred around 6:08 p.m. near Georgesville Road and Clime Road North.
Multiple officers confronted and shot the suspect, as verified by Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9. The injured officer was transported to Grant Medical Center, and he’s reportedly in stable condition.
According to police, the dead suspect was responsible for a shooting at an Amazon facility in West Jefferson. The man was trailed by a plainclothes officer into Columbus, where additional law enforcement officers intervened. The man opened fire on the police, leading them to return fire.
The suspect was taken to Doctors West Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:57 p.m. As announced by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired at the Amazon building were made around 4:42 p.m.
Employees were evacuated from the facility, and no injuries were reported at the Amazon facility, which cancelled shifts and provided pay to all workers. Amazon also arranged for counseling resources for those in need.
The Ohio Bureau of Investigation has been seized with investigating the police-related shooting, along with the attorney general’s office.
