A man and two police officers were taken to hospitals after the Saturday afternoon encounter on Heritage Hill Drive.
LAKEVILLE, MA — A man was injured in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon after Lakeville police responded to a home for a report of a distressed person who might be under the influence and armed with a firearm, authorities said.
The shooting happened Sept. 26 at a residence on Heritage Hill Drive. Police said officers provided emergency aid to the injured man before Lakeville Fire Department paramedics took him to an area hospital. Two Lakeville police officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluations. Authorities had not released the man’s condition or explained why the officers required medical evaluations as of early Sunday.
Lakeville police released few details about what happened immediately before officers opened fire. The department said an officer-involved shooting occurred during the response but did not identify the injured man or the officers involved. Police also had not said how many officers fired their weapons, how many shots were fired or whether the man fired a weapon.
The initial police statement said officers had responded after receiving a report of a disturbed person who might be under the influence and armed with a firearm. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether a gun was recovered at the scene or provided additional information about the circumstances that prompted the original call.
Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public after the shooting. Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident, an outside review that will examine the circumstances surrounding the officers’ use of force.
Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins declined to provide additional details when contacted by The Boston Globe and referred questions about the shooting to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. The initial department statement directed further media inquiries to that office as the investigation continued.
Local news reports placed the police response Saturday afternoon at a home on Heritage Hill Drive. NBC 10 reported police were in the area at about 2:30 p.m., while local outlet Nemasket Week reported that officers were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m., citing police scanner information. Police did not provide an exact time for the shooting in their initial public statement.
Authorities also had not released information about the severity of the man’s injuries, whether he remained hospitalized or whether any charges were being considered. No identities had been released in connection with the encounter.
The investigation remained active Sunday, with Massachusetts State Police detectives working under the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. Officials had not announced when additional details, including information about the man’s condition or the sequence of events leading to the shooting, would be released.
