Police say an altercation behind a Homestead Road strip center escalated into gunfire as officers moved to disperse a large gathering.
HOUSTON, TX — One person died and five others were wounded Saturday night when shots were fired during a large gathering tied to a trail-ride event in northeast Houston, authorities said. The gunfire began around 8 p.m. behind a strip center along Homestead Road as officers worked to clear a crowd.
Police reported that hundreds of people had assembled near Homestead Road and Guadalupe Street before an altercation behind the businesses turned violent. Investigators said multiple people opened fire. By late Sunday, detectives said one of the six people struck by bullets had died, while the others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from stable to critical. The Houston Police Department’s homicide unit is leading the case. No arrests were announced, and investigators were still working to identify any shooters captured on video and to collect statements from those who remained at the scene.
Officers already at the plaza to manage the crowd rushed toward the sound of shots behind the buildings and found several victims in the parking area, according to police. Emergency crews treated three people there before transport, and three others arrived at hospitals on their own, officials said. Family members identified the person who died as 24-year-old Cory Young Jr. “He was a kind-hearted young man,” said Erica Smith-Bryant, his aunt. She said Young left home for a nearby gathering shortly before the shooting and never returned. Police described the turnout as “possibly hundreds,” with horses and riders among those in the area as night fell.
Authorities said six people in total were shot. Two males — including a teenager — were initially listed in critical condition, while a 16-year-old boy, a 20-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman were reported in stable condition. Officials did not release the names of the injured. The shooting unfolded in the 11300 block of Homestead Road, where security cameras from several storefronts face an open lot behind the strip center. Investigators spent hours canvassing those businesses for footage and were reviewing clips posted to social media that showed people running as a rapid series of shots cracked through music and crowd noise. Police said it remains unknown how many shooters were involved and what sparked the fight that preceded the gunfire.
The Homestead corridor has long hosted trail-ride meetups tied to Black cowboy and urban trail-riding groups that gather across the region. Saturday’s event drew a larger-than-usual crowd as warmer, post-freeze weekend weather brought riders and spectators outside. HPD said officers were called earlier in the evening for traffic and crowd control as people packed into lots around the strip center. Residents and shop owners described a chaotic few minutes after the shots, with vehicles speeding away and others stalled as first responders moved in. While police have recorded shootings at large outdoor gatherings in past summers, trail-ride organizers typically coordinate with property owners and law enforcement when events are permitted. It was not immediately clear whether Saturday’s gathering had formal event plans or hired security.
Homicide detectives opened a death investigation and will forward their findings to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office once they determine who fired and under what circumstances. As of Sunday afternoon, police had not announced any suspects or released a description tied to the shooters. Detectives said they were processing shell casings recovered behind the strip center and awaiting ballistic analysis to determine how many weapons were used. Hospital officials were expected to provide updated conditions for the surviving victims. If arrests occur, initial court appearances would take place at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center; any charges could range from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to murder, depending on evidence gathered this week.
By midday Sunday, officers remained posted along Homestead Road as evidence technicians photographed the back lot and marked casings. Tire tracks cut through rutted dirt behind the storefronts, and a few riders led horses away from the area as tow trucks cleared vehicles. “It was senseless,” Smith-Bryant said of her nephew’s killing, adding that the family gathered at a nearby home while awaiting word from detectives. A Houston police lieutenant at the scene said officers were working to contact property owners and speak with anyone who witnessed the altercation before the shooting.
As of Sunday evening, HPD said the investigation was ongoing and that additional updates would be provided when more details are confirmed. Detectives planned to review more surveillance video from surrounding businesses and compile a timeline of the events that led to the fatal volley of gunfire.
