One dead, nine injured in shooting during homecoming

NASHVILLE, TN – A shooting during homecoming events near Tennessee State University has left one person dead and nine others injured, according to Nashville police. The incident unfolded during festivities on the university’s campus on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, nine people were injured. The victims include three juveniles aged between 12 and 14, who are currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The deceased victim is identified as a 24-year-old individual who succumbed to injuries sustained in the gunfire exchange.

Authorities say gunfire erupted just after 5 p.m. following an altercation between two groups. Preliminary investigations indicate that some individuals caught in the chaos were likely innocent bystanders. While four victims were rushed to hospitals by ambulance, others were transported in private vehicles.

Police suspect that some of the wounded might have been involved in the initial gun battle. Injuries among the victims vary in severity, with some suffering minor wounds.

Officers found a handgun at the scene of the crime, and officials suspect the shooters utilized similar firearms in the attack.

First responders were already present for the homecoming parade and were able to provide immediate assistance when the shooting began. Fire department personnel reportedly used belts as makeshift tourniquets to help stabilize the victims.

The majority of attendees were en route or present at the Tennessee State University football game at Nissan Stadium at the time of the shooting. However, a significant crowd had gathered earlier in the day for the parade.
