The late-night collision with a utility truck on Washington Street remains under investigation by local and state authorities.
DEDHAM, MA — A pickup truck driver was killed late Friday in a head-on collision with a utility truck on Washington Street in Dedham, authorities said.
The crash happened at about 11:15 p.m. Sept. 4 in the area of 960 to 961 Washington St., according to statements from Dedham police and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. The pickup truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities had not publicly identified the driver as of Sunday, saying the name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Dedham’s E-911 dispatch center began receiving multiple calls about the two-vehicle collision at about 11:14 p.m. Callers described it as a head-on crash and reported that one of the vehicles was on fire, police said. Dedham police and firefighters responded along with Coastal Ambulance and police and fire personnel from neighboring Westwood.
Emergency crews worked to help an injured person in one of the vehicles while firefighters extinguished the fire, according to police. Authorities have not released additional information about injuries to anyone other than the pickup truck driver or said whether the utility truck driver required medical treatment.
The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said the collision involved a pickup truck and a utility truck. Boston 25 News identified the larger vehicle as an Eversource utility truck. An Eversource spokesperson told the station that the company was supporting the investigation by local public safety officials and had no additional information to release.
Investigators have not said what caused the vehicles to collide or whether speed, impairment, distraction, road conditions or another factor may have contributed. No charges have been announced, and authorities have not identified either vehicle’s direction of travel before the crash.
The investigation includes Dedham police detectives and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. Massachusetts State Police personnel from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section are assisting. The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section also became involved because the crash included a utility vehicle.
Washington Street was closed while investigators examined the crash scene and crews worked to clear the roadway. Police initially said the street would remain closed until investigators finished their work. Authorities have not released a detailed reconstruction of the collision.
As of Sept. 6, officials had announced no further details about the pickup truck driver’s identity or the circumstances that led to the crash. The fatal collision remains under investigation by Dedham police, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police.
