Police arrest 16-year-old for killing high school football player

DALLAS, TX – Tragic news unfolded on Friday night in South Dallas as a 17-year-old David Washington was fatally shot at a Love’s gas station on Polk Street. The Dallas Independent School District confirmed that Washington was a senior at Kimball High School and a member of the football team.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. when a large crowd assembled at the gas station directly across from John Kincaide Stadium, the venue for Friday night’s football game between Duncanville and South Oak Cliff. Washington was followed by a group of people, and a confrontation ensued. A gun was pulled out during this confrontation, and Washington was shot.

Washington was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. A 16-year-old was arrested by Dallas police on Saturday in relation to the shooting and now faces murder charges.

Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins responded to the incident, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe zone for children in the area. Atkins represents District 8, where the shooting occurred.

It’s unknown whether Washington attended the football game on Friday night or if he knew the group of people who were following him. The 16-year-old who was arrested was not identified due to their age.

According to a community post on social media, a balloon release in memory of Washington is planned to take place at Kimball High School on Monday night.
