Police officer killed in crash, another severely injured

GOLDEN, CO – A tragic incident unfolded in Golden late Wednesday afternoon, marking a somber moment for the community and law enforcement across Colorado. A police officer from the Golden Police Department lost his life, and a fellow officer was seriously injured in a collision on Highway 58 near Washington Avenue. The officers were investigating a traffic accident when a suspected drunk driver struck them, resulting in Colorado’s first line-of-duty death this year.

Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey, speaking with visible emotion, shared details about the fallen officer, a 33-year-old man whose name is being withheld at the family’s request. Chief Harvey described the officer as an exceptional individual with a distinguished military background, having served as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and commander. The officer leaves behind a wife, sister, and parents, who are traveling from out of state to be with loved ones.

The injured officer, a female colleague, was transported to the hospital with severe injuries. Her condition remains serious, and she is receiving medical care. Chief Harvey expressed gratitude for the support extended by the Colorado State Patrol and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, who are assisting with the investigation and providing resources during this challenging time.

The suspected driver involved in the incident has been taken into custody, though further details about the suspect’s identity and potential charges have not been disclosed. The crash occurred at a location well-known to locals, an area where traffic typically moves swiftly, yet offers space for safe roadside activity.

The Golden Police Department, a small force with just 71 members, is grappling with the loss of a colleague. Officers from across the metro area have shown solidarity, lining up at the scene to pay their respects and support the grieving department. This marks a significant loss for Golden, a city with a longstanding police service dating back to the 1870s, and there are no records indicating a previous line-of-duty death in the department’s history.

As the community mourns, preparations are underway for a procession to honor the fallen officer, with law enforcement agencies from the region expected to participate. Updates on the situation and the officer’s memorial will continue to be provided as more information becomes available.
