Two men were hospitalized after gunfire erupted at separate locations about 15 minutes apart Friday night.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia police are investigating whether two shootings in North Philadelphia that left two men wounded and produced more than 40 spent shell casings were connected after the incidents unfolded minutes apart Friday night.
The first shooting was reported at about 8:15 p.m. Aug. 14 in the 2100 block of North Gratz Street, near 21st and Gratz streets. Officers found a man who had been shot multiple times and took him to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigators recovered about 20 spent shell casings from the first scene. Police also stopped a vehicle of interest connected to that investigation, though authorities had not announced any arrests or identified anyone as a suspect.
About 15 minutes later, officers were called to another shooting near North 25th and West Elkhart streets, roughly a mile and a half from the first scene. Police found between 25 and 30 spent shell casings there but initially located no shooting victim.
Investigators later learned that a 23-year-old man had arrived at Temple University Hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to his back. Police said he was in stable condition. The vehicle used to take him to the hospital was being held as part of the investigation.
Chief Inspector D.F. Pace said investigators had not established a connection between the shootings but were considering that possibility because of how closely they occurred in time and distance. Police were reviewing surveillance footage from both locations as detectives worked to determine what happened before and after the gunfire.
The two crime scenes together contained at least 45 spent shell casings based on the preliminary counts released by police. Authorities had not publicly identified a motive, named suspects or explained whether investigators believe the same people or vehicles were involved in both incidents.
Both cases remained under investigation by Philadelphia police. No arrests had been announced as of early Saturday, and authorities had not released additional information about the identity of the critically wounded man or any confirmed relationship between the two victims.
