MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Two individuals were killed and a third critically injured in a shooting that took place at a Minneapolis encampment on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred on Snelling Avenue around 2:30 p.m., according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
Officers responding to the crime scene discovered two men with fatal gunshot wounds to the head inside the encampment. A woman, also struck by gunfire, was swiftly transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided details of the grim discovery during a press briefing while investigations continue. The identities of the victims have not been released, pending family notification.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the city’s ongoing struggle with encampments and called for a reassessment of policies that have hindered resource allocation aimed at closing these makeshift shelters. Frey emphasized the necessity of preventing the establishment and relocation of homeless encampments within the city.
Local business owner Nancy Ford expressed concern about the persistent encampment issues. Ford, who has been advocating for change for over a decade, argued that leaving vulnerable populations in such conditions reflects a failure in community support and exposes them to exploitation.
During the press conference, Frey highlighted fentanyl as a critical factor contributing to violence and crime within these communities, urging residents and officials to recognize the root causes of these incidents.
However, differing opinions emerged, with some community activists attributing the rise of encampments to broader socioeconomic issues. They pointed out rising homelessness within the Minneapolis Public Schools system and the impact of evictions as primary contributors rather than solely drug-related concerns.
Activists advocated for a “housing-first” approach, which has shown effectiveness in stabilizing individuals by providing tiny homes equipped with necessary support services. They argue that addressing poverty and extending supportive services can lead to lasting solutions.
The city’s police are continuing their investigation into the shooting. Three individuals were initially detained at the scene but were subsequently released after being ruled out as suspects.
