WICHITA, KS – In a shocking domestic altercation, a husband shot his wife outside a southern Kansas elementary school Monday morning. The incident took place just after they had dropped their two children off for class.
The shooting happened at around 9:15 a.m. in front of Cessna Elementary School, as stated by Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter during a news briefing. The identities of both the suspect and the victim remain undisclosed.
Witnesses described the horrifying moment when the woman was shot in the chest. After she was shot, she then fled toward the school to seek help.
Sheriff Easter reported that when the responding deputy arrived, the suspect had a gun pointed at the woman’s head. The deputy took cover, then shot and detained the suspect following a brief struggle.
The scene unfolded after a Lyft driver dropped off the couple at the school. Sheriff’s officials questioned the driver and other witnesses who were present during the incident.
The husband and wife were both transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The school had been placed on lockdown as a safety precaution. Fortunately, all students, teachers, and staff were accounted for without any injuries.
