PHILADELPHIA, PA – A horrific incident occurred in North Philadelphia where a 13-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a home on Wednesday evening. The victim, identified as Alaysia Smith by her mother, Ayla Bruce, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest. The girl was later pronounced dead in a local hospital.
The attack happened in the second-floor hallway of a home in the 2800 block of North Bailey Street around 7:37 p.m. Alaysia’s mother, Bruce, is trying to come to terms with her unexpected and devastating loss. She said that her daughter was a well-loved individual and expressed confusion about how or why this tragic event occurred.
Police noted that they did not find any weapons or ballistic evidence at the scene. It is believed that Alaysia was at the house with relatives to visit friends. Bruce shared that it was not unusual for Alaysia to be in the neighborhood, as she had friends there and it’s the neighborhood they come from.
Authorities stated that two teen boys, who were residents of the home, were observed fleeing the scene after the shooting. The investigation is ongoing as police are studying the angles of whether the event was accidental or an act of foul play.
Alaysia was recognized to be respectful by neighbors and was popular for being a cheerleader who adored attending football games. Additionally, her mother described her as a good student who prioritized academics. The Wissahickon Charter School, where Alaysia was an eighth-grade student, confirmed her enrollment on its Fernhill Campus.
The investigation continues as police examine private video footage and question adults affiliated with the property for additional insights. No arrests have been made at present.
