Six Teens Detained in Halloween Gunfire Investigation

Police used a drone to track a vehicle leaving the area after officers heard gunfire near a large gathering.

KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City police detained six teenage boys after gunfire was reported near a large Halloween night gathering in the Brookside area, then released all six while detectives continued investigating the case.

Officers were near West 63rd Street and Walnut Avenue around 10 p.m. Saturday when they heard what sounded like gunshots and saw a vehicle leaving the area, according to police accounts provided to local news organizations. Police used a drone to follow the vehicle before officers stopped it. Six juvenile males were taken into custody.

The incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault. Police identified the reported victim only as a teenage boy. Authorities said the teen was not struck by a bullet and no injuries were reported. Police have not publicly identified the six teens because they are juveniles, and officials have not announced charges against them.

During the traffic stop, one passenger attempted to run from officers but was quickly apprehended, police said. Investigators have not publicly said which person, if any, fired the shots, whether a firearm was recovered or what circumstances led to the gunfire. Those details remained part of the continuing investigation.

By Monday, police said all six teenagers had been released pending further investigation. Their release did not end the case, and detectives were continuing to gather information about what happened near the Halloween gathering. Police have not announced that any of the six teens has been formally charged in connection with the gunfire.

Residents interviewed by KCTV said the sound of gunfire, sirens and people outside disrupted what had otherwise been a night of trick-or-treating in the Brookside neighborhood. Some neighbors said they had already gone inside for the evening when the disturbance began. Their accounts described uncertainty and concern as police responded to the area.

The Brookside incident occurred during a weekend in which Kansas City police were responding to several separate violent incidents. Authorities also pushed back against inaccurate social media claims that portrayed the weekend as involving broader or more widespread violence than police records supported. Officials urged residents to rely on verified information from police about individual incidents.

The circumstances surrounding the Brookside gunfire remain under investigation. Detectives have asked people who were in the area on Halloween night, including residents or businesses with surveillance video, to provide information that could help establish what happened and who was responsible for the shots.
