Stabbing leaves 11-year-old dead, mom critically injured

CHICAGO, IL – A brutal incident in the Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago left an 11-year-old boy dead and a pregnant woman critically injured with multiple stab wounds. A suspect has been taken into custody, but the police have thus far released no additional details about the individual.

The incident took place around 8 a.m. Wednesday, when police, responding to distress reports, discovered the wounded boy and woman at the Peterson Plaza apartments on the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue. The boy had been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Jaydone Perkins. He had a severe chest injury and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In addition to Perkins’ death, a 33-year-old pregnant woman was in critical condition with multiple stab wounds. Police say that she was the deceased child’s mother. Authorities transported her to a local hospital for treatment.

The investigators have indicated that this episode of violence was a domestic-related incident. Eyewitness accounts from neighbors relayed the haunting sounds of screams for help echoing throughout the morning just prior to the police arriving.

The community finds itself wracked with grief over the loss of the young boy, whom they described as a polite, well-mannered child. Tributes to his mother paint a picture of a caring woman loved by all.

The crime scene attracted a significant police presence throughout Wednesday afternoon, as the parking lot and surrounding area of the apartment complex were cordoned off for the ongoing investigation.

Further details on the investigation have not yet been released.
