ALHAMBRA, CA — A high-speed pursuit of a reportedly stolen SUV ended Tuesday afternoon in Alhambra when the driver exited the San Bernardino Freeway, clipped another vehicle and crashed before surrendering to California Highway Patrol officers.
The Sept. 22 pursuit began in the Inland Empire and continued west into Los Angeles County, crossing a large section of Southern California before ending around 2 p.m. Authorities said the vehicle had been reported stolen in Redlands. The driver was taken into custody after the crash, and no serious injury to the driver of the other vehicle was immediately reported.
Redlands police initially pursued the SUV before the California Highway Patrol took over the chase at about 1:20 p.m., according to reports citing a CHP officer. The vehicle, described as a silver Toyota RAV4 from the early 2000s, continued west on the San Bernardino Freeway, also known as Interstate 10.
The driver reached speeds of up to 90 mph during the pursuit, according to ABC7. Multiple CHP vehicles followed as the SUV traveled from the Inland Empire toward the San Gabriel Valley. The chase continued for roughly 40 minutes after the CHP took over.
As the SUV reached Alhambra, the driver left the freeway around 2 p.m. Reports differed on the precise exit involved, with ABC7 identifying the Hellman Avenue exit while FOX 11 reported the pursuit ended near the Fremont Avenue exit. The available reports agree that the SUV crashed as the pursuit came to an end in Alhambra.
The SUV clipped another vehicle on the off-ramp before skidding to a stop and striking a traffic sign, according to MyNewsLA. The driver of the other vehicle did not appear to suffer serious injuries. Authorities had not released additional information about that motorist’s condition.
After the crash, the SUV’s driver got out of the vehicle and complied with officers’ commands, ABC7 reported. The man, who was reported to be the SUV’s only occupant, was taken into custody without further incident. Authorities had not publicly identified him in the reports available Wednesday morning.
Details about the reported theft remained limited. Authorities had not publicly explained when or how the Toyota was allegedly stolen in Redlands, and the available reports did not identify any criminal charges filed against the driver.
