Authorities said three people who knew the suspect were wounded in shootings Friday across Pasadena, New Caney and Houston.
HOUSTON, TX — A man suspected of shooting three people during a series of attacks across the Houston area Friday was later found dead in a vehicle in Houston with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The shootings unfolded Sept. 4 in Pasadena, New Caney and Houston, drawing investigators from several law enforcement agencies into a search that crossed city and county boundaries. Authorities said the three people who were shot knew the suspect and were connected to an ongoing dispute with him. The nature of that dispute had not been publicly explained. All three victims were hospitalized and were expected to survive, according to reports citing investigators.
The suspect was identified in multiple reports as Pedro Gonzalez or Pedro Gonzales. Published accounts differed on the spelling of his last name and also reported conflicting ages, so those details could not be independently reconciled. Authorities linked him to all three shootings based on their investigation into the sequence of events.
The first shooting was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. in Pasadena near West Jackson Avenue and Walter Street. Pasadena police said a woman found inside a vehicle had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital and identified the suspected shooter as her former husband, according to police information reported by local news organizations.
Several hours later, Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies and emergency personnel responded to the 2300 block of Thelma Lane in New Caney after a 911 caller reported that a woman had been shot. The call came in about 9:19 a.m. The 52-year-old woman was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.
Investigators then learned of another shooting in east Houston near a Burger King along the East Freeway at Kress Street. Houston police said two vehicles had pulled into the parking lot before the suspect allegedly shot a man who was in the other vehicle. The wounded man went inside the restaurant for help and was taken to a hospital. Authorities said he knew the suspect.
As police from multiple jurisdictions searched for the suspect, Pasadena authorities tracked his vehicle into Houston. Houston police said they were notified about 11:30 a.m. that the pickup had been located in the Near Northside area. A SWAT team responded as officers worked to approach the vehicle.
Police later found the suspect dead in the back seat of the vehicle from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered. Investigators said ballistic testing would be used to determine whether evidence recovered from the separate shooting scenes was connected to the weapon found with the suspect.
The Houston Police Department, Pasadena Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the investigation. Authorities had not publicly disclosed further details about the dispute linking the suspect and the three wounded people as of Saturday, and the investigation into the separate shooting scenes remained active.
