Alfredo Carballo Gonzalez was extradited from Mexico and booked on murder and evidence-tampering charges tied to a 2025 case.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A man accused of killing a Hialeah resident whose body was later found in a county-issued recycling bin has been returned to South Florida and jailed after an arrest in Mexico earlier this week, authorities said.
Officials said the case centers on the August 2025 disappearance of 37-year-old Daylon Fleitas Gonzalez. Investigators have been searching for Alfredo Carballo Gonzalez, 32, for months, alleging he fled the country following the killing. His return marks a new stage in a long-running investigation that also led to the earlier arrest of his girlfriend. Detectives say the charges include second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence, signaling prosecutors believe they can proceed without a motive publicly established. Immediate court dates and possible additional charges remain under review.
According to investigators, Fleitas met with Carballo on Aug. 3, 2025, around 2:30 p.m. in the area of 95th Avenue and Northwest 106th Street in Medley. Surveillance images later showed Carballo entering Fleitas’ pickup. Detectives say an altercation followed. On Aug. 8, officers found the victim’s truck abandoned in a field near Southwest 227th Avenue and Southwest 260th Street with blood-stained items inside. The next day, a blue county recycling bin containing Fleitas’ body was located in a wooded area along Southwest 203rd Avenue. “The evidence pointed us to a deliberate effort to remove and conceal the body,” a Miami-Dade homicide detective said. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by sharp-force injuries.
Authorities allege Carballo drove off in Fleitas’ truck while a second vehicle followed. Investigators identified the second driver as Carballo’s girlfriend, 27-year-old Ariely Alvarez Cabrera. A warrant says video showed a recycling bin loaded into the truck bed and later seen again near the recovery site. Detectives also cited toll photos indicating the truck operator did not match the victim’s description. Alvarez Cabrera was arrested in Mexico in September and extradited to Florida; a judge set her bond at $200,000 with house arrest after her first appearance. She is charged as an accessory after the fact and with tampering. Her attorney previously said she cooperated with authorities and denied knowing about the killing.
The encounter that preceded the killing remains under examination. A warrant filed last year said Fleitas planned to meet a friend to collect $10,000 he was owed. After he did not return home, a missing-person report was opened on Aug. 4. A text to Fleitas’ partner from an unknown number on Aug. 5 claimed he had been stopped by police and would flee to Mexico; investigators said a follow-up question only the victim would know went unanswered. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives took over the case on Aug. 7 at the request of Hialeah police, expanding the search to rural areas of southwest Miami-Dade where the truck and bin were found.
Officials said Mexican authorities took Carballo into custody on Jan. 27, 2026, and he was extradited to Miami the same week. Miami-Dade detectives arrested and booked him on Jan. 28 on counts of second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. He is being held at the county jail. A first-appearance hearing date for Carballo was not immediately available. Prosecutors are reviewing the file for potential grand jury action; no trial date has been set. Alvarez Cabrera remains on supervised release as her charges move through court.
Outside the Hialeah neighborhood where Fleitas once lived, residents described a case that has hung over the community for months. “It was horrifying to hear he was found in a bin,” said neighbor Yanelis Pérez, who brought flowers to a small memorial. In Medley, workers near the truck yard where the meeting occurred said detectives canvassed for camera footage and spent days combing nearby lots. “They asked everyone about unusual bin movements that weekend,” said Carlos Reyes, who manages a warehouse off Northwest 106th Street. Relatives of Fleitas have not spoken publicly since the latest arrest but previously thanked investigators for keeping attention on the case.
As of Friday, the suspect is in Miami-Dade custody and the homicide case continues with charging decisions pending. The next expected milestone is a court appearance and formal filing of charges in the coming days.
