ORO VALLEY, AZ – A beloved golf course employee in Arizona has tragically died following an attack by a swarm of bees. Rick Messina, 57, was performing groundskeeping work at Pusch Ridge Course in Oro Valley when he was stung multiple times on June 24. He passed away at a local hospital three days later.
The incident occurred while Messina was mowing the eighth hole of the golf course. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to the injuries inflicted by the bee stings. Messina had been a valued member of El Conquistador Golf’s agronomy team since July 2022.
In response to this tragic event, the golf club hired professional beekeepers to inspect the premises. They examined all 45 holes on the course but found no further signs of bee activity.
The golf club, deeply affected by the loss, described Messina as “a dedicated and cherished member of our team.” He was held in high regard for his work ethic and overall commitiment to his job.
Oro Valley officials have issued a warning, reminding residents and visitors that summer is the peak season for bee swarms and urging everyone to stay vigilant. The community mourns the loss of Messina, who left a lasting impact on both the golf club and the local area.
