Deputies later contacted and interviewed the 17-year-old after his 37-year-old father was found dead inside their northwest Harris County home.
HARRIS COUNTY, TX — The case of a 17-year-old who deputies say shot and killed his father during a fight at their northwest Harris County home will be presented to a grand jury as investigators continue working to determine what happened before the shooting.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies have since made contact with the teenager and interviewed him. Authorities have not announced criminal charges, and investigators have said questions remain about the confrontation between the father and son. The sheriff’s office said the case will go before a grand jury, which will consider whether charges should be filed.
Harris County Precinct 1 deputies were called to a home in the 7700 block of Westbank Avenue, near West Road and Fairbanks North Houston Road, at about 1:20 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6. Deputies found a 37-year-old man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Investigators said family members told them the father and his 17-year-old son had been fighting before the shooting. According to the sheriff’s office, the teenager obtained a pistol during the confrontation, shot his father and left the home. Authorities initially searched the surrounding area after he left on foot.
The exact circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Brown said investigators were trying to determine whether the father had been assaulting the teenager or whether the teenager had been assaulting his father before the gunfire. That question could affect how authorities evaluate the case.
Family members told investigators that the father and son had argued before and that their disputes were an ongoing issue, authorities said. Investigators have not publicly identified the subject of Friday’s argument or said what caused the confrontation to become violent. No motive has been established publicly.
The teenager’s mother and two younger siblings, believed to be about 12 and 14 years old, were also inside the home when the shooting occurred, according to investigators. None of them was injured. Authorities have not publicly released the names of the father or the teenager.
Earlier Friday, deputies said they wanted to locate the teenager so investigators could hear his account of the confrontation. Authorities also said at the time that they did not believe he posed a threat to the surrounding community. The sheriff’s office later confirmed that deputies had contacted and interviewed him.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced charges. The sheriff’s office said the case will be presented to a grand jury as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation.
