CHESAPEAKE, VA – A tragic wrong-way crash involving an ambulance on I-64 has claimed a third victim, a 22-year-old woman from Elizabeth City. The accident, which occurred early Sunday morning, involved a private ambulance returning from a call.
David Carter and his cousin, 53-year-old Steven Michael Anderson, known as Mike, began their paramedic training together over a decade ago. While they eventually joined different ambulance companies, Mike was working for Midwest Medical at the time of the crash. He was accompanied by Sky, a young co-worker he was mentoring.
The collision occurred at 2:31 a.m. when a black Lexus, allegedly driven by 39-year-old Chiquita Taylor, collided with the ambulance. The vehicle was reportedly traveling in the wrong direction on the highway.
Virginia State Police and Chesapeake first responders arrived at the scene to find both vehicles heavily damaged and on fire. Taylor did not survive the crash, succumbing to her injuries before reaching the hospital.
Mike and Sky were critically injured in the burning ambulance and were rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Tragically, both succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
David Carter spoke of his cousin’s dedication to helping others. Despite the inherent risks of the job, Mike’s commitment to his co-worker and his community was unwavering. Carter expressed confidence that the emergency responders did everything possible to save Mike.
Mike had a history of selflessness, having traveled to Asheville, North Carolina, to assist with recovery efforts following devastating floods, even at the expense of time with his family.
Authorities are investigating whether alcohol or speed played roles in the crash. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
