Toddler fatally struck by car after wandering from home

ALLEN TOWNSHIP, MI – Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in south-central Michigan, where a 2-year-old girl who wandered from her home was fatally struck by a vehicle. Michigan State Police reported the accident occurred outside the toddler’s residence in Allen Township, Hillsdale County.

Troopers stated that around 8:20 p.m. on Friday, they arrived at the scene in response to a car crash involving a pedestrian along U.S. Highway 12. Upon arrival, they found a first responder performing life-saving measures on the young girl, who was lying in the road. The toddler was subsequently transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate the child had been put to bed by her parents but managed to escape as they were occupied with household tasks. She ventured out to the street, where she was struck by a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle was driven by a 38-year-old local resident.

Officials have not disclosed the identity of the child. According to the police, there are no indications that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, and no charges have been filed at this time.

An autopsy on the child is scheduled, and the investigation continues. Authorities are asking for witnesses or anyone with relevant information about the incident to contact the Michigan State Police.
