Sheriff Javier Salazar said investigators are reviewing the deaths as a suspected murder-suicide tied to domestic violence.
BEXAR COUNTY, TX — A man and woman were found dead Friday night inside a southwest Bexar County home, and sheriff’s investigators believe the case may be a murder-suicide, authorities said Saturday.
The deaths are being investigated by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office after deputies were called to the 15000 block of Escalante Pass near Watson Road. Sheriff Javier Salazar said the woman, 55, appeared to be the victim of a homicide, while the man, 58, may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office had not publicly confirmed their names or final causes of death.
Deputies responded around 8:24 p.m. Friday after a young woman believed to be a family member went to the home to check on the couple. Salazar said she had not heard from them for at least a day and became worried. Inside the home, deputies found both people dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the two were married and lived at the home. “Domestic violence is what I believe to be an escalating crime,” Salazar said during a briefing. “It doesn’t go away.”
Salazar said early evidence pointed to the man shooting the woman before killing himself, but he stressed that the medical examiner would make the official ruling. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The sheriff said the woman had a gunshot wound to the upper body. Investigators had not said Saturday how long the couple had been dead before the family member arrived. Officials also had not released a detailed timeline of the hours before the shooting or said whether neighbors reported hearing gunfire.
The home is in a residential area of southwest Bexar County near Von Ormy, outside San Antonio city limits. The case adds to a series of domestic violence-related deaths investigated by the sheriff’s office this year. Salazar said deputies found a prior history between the couple, including a previous misdemeanor domestic violence case. He said that case had been dismissed, but he did not give further details during the briefing. Investigators were expected to review past calls, court records and any available witness statements to better understand what led to the deaths.
No criminal charges were expected against the dead man, but the case remained an active death investigation. The sheriff’s office was working with the medical examiner to confirm identities, causes of death and manners of death. Detectives were also expected to process the home, document the firearm evidence and speak with relatives or others who had recent contact with the couple. Salazar said the findings would determine how the case is formally classified in county records.
The discovery left investigators with few public answers Saturday beyond the suspected sequence of events. Deputies did not report any search for an outside suspect, and Salazar did not say there was an ongoing threat to neighbors. The sheriff used the briefing to describe domestic violence as a danger that can grow over time, saying warning signs often do not stop without intervention. He said the case appeared to involve people known to each other, not a random act of violence.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will make the final determinations in the deaths. As of Saturday afternoon, the sheriff’s office had not released the couple’s names, and no additional briefing time had been announced.
