Chicago police said a white SUV fled after shots were fired outside a South Hermitage Avenue home.
CHICAGO, IL — Two men were killed and a woman was critically wounded early Saturday when someone in a white SUV opened fire outside a home in West Englewood, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, adding another deadly case to a stretch of South Side gun violence under investigation by Area One detectives. Police had not announced any arrests by Saturday morning, and the motive was not known.
Police said the victims were standing outside a house when the SUV approached. A male suspect inside the vehicle fired shots, striking all three people. The 30-year-old man was shot in the head, and the 31-year-old man was shot in the chest. Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. The 26-year-old woman was shot in the body and taken to the same hospital in critical condition. “Area One detectives are investigating,” police said in an early statement on the shooting.
The SUV fled north on Hermitage Avenue after the gunfire, police said. Investigators did not immediately release the victims’ names, a license plate number or a fuller description of the shooter. Police also did not say whether the people who were shot lived at the house or whether they were targeted. The shooting scene sits in West Englewood, a South Side community area where officers and violence prevention groups have long dealt with shootings tied to blocks, vehicles and late-night gatherings. The attack left two families waiting for formal identifications and one woman fighting for her life at a South Side trauma center.
The shooting came days after police reported another shooting in nearby Englewood, where two teenagers were wounded early Monday in the 400 block of West 61st Street. City data and recent police reports have shown shootings and homicides tracking above last year’s low pace in the first part of 2026, even as some other categories of violent crime have fallen. West Englewood is among the neighborhoods included in city violence reduction efforts that focus on shootings and homicides across a smaller group of community areas. Saturday’s attack adds to the public safety pressure facing police, street outreach workers and residents as Chicago moves deeper into summer.
Area One detectives are expected to review nearby surveillance video, look for shell casings and speak with witnesses who may have seen the SUV before or after the shooting. The Cook County medical examiner’s office typically releases names after relatives are notified. No charges had been announced Saturday morning. Police had not reported whether investigators recovered a firearm or whether they knew how many shots were fired. The case remained open as a double homicide and aggravated battery investigation.
South Hermitage Avenue was quiet by morning, but the shooting left a clear trail for investigators: three victims outside a home, a white SUV pulling up, gunfire from inside the vehicle and the SUV heading north. The attack happened at an hour when many residents were asleep, leaving police to piece together what witnesses heard or saw in the moments before officers and paramedics arrived. The woman’s condition was listed as critical after she was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, the same hospital where the two men were pronounced dead.
The investigation remained active Saturday, with no suspect in custody and no motive released. The next public update is expected after police identify the victims or announce an arrest.
