MEMPHIS, TN – Late one night in July, the Memphis Police Department’s downtown command center became a critical tool in averting potential danger. Officers monitoring the area through advanced AI-powered cameras spotted individuals brandishing weapons just a block away from the city’s famous Beale Street.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. as police scanned live feeds from their command center. A camera captured several individuals, one with a weapon visibly tucked into his waistband. Officers quickly relayed this information to their colleagues in the field.
As squad cars arrived at the scene near Peabody and Rufus Thomas, one suspect attempted to flee towards Beale Street. Cameras tracked his movements as he dashed through the entertainment district, ultimately leading to his capture by officers.
The subsequent search of the suspect’s vehicle revealed multiple firearms, marijuana, a scale, and a pistol with a loaded magazine under a seat. Officers also discovered illegal machine gun conversion devices on two Glocks, capable of firing 1,000 rounds per minute.
The downtown command center, operational since April, has been lauded for its role in reducing crime. By integrating business cameras and utilizing real-time monitoring, the facility provides an enhanced ability to respond to incidents swiftly.
In just four months, the center has assisted in over 120 calls, resulting in more than 40 arrests, including 16 felonies. Among these was a reckless driving incident on Peabody and another involving a man hiding a handgun with an extended magazine.
Memphis police credit the center for a 31% decrease in downtown crime compared to the previous year. Despite persistent issues like car break-ins and aggravated assaults, the overall crime rate is the lowest in five years.
The command center continues to play a vital role in city safety, especially during major events like the Memphis in May festival and the upcoming St. Jude Marathon. Police emphasize their commitment to ensuring public safety and restoring community confidence.
