FRESNO, CA – On a quiet Fresno street, a car crash took the lives of two sisters. A police chase ended abruptly when a vehicle slammed into their bedroom, leading to the deaths of 18-year-old Eliza Yang and her 25-year-old sister, Mang Yang.
The Yang family awoke Thursday morning to a devastating scene, reminiscent of a nightmare, after a white Chevy Tahoe driven by Adam Canales, an 18-year-old suspect in a gang-related disturbance, careened into their home. Canales was reportedly driving under the influence and without a license.
Family members, grappling with the loss, expressed their devastation. “Our heart is broken,” said Ronald Yang, the girls’ uncle. Their father, clutching stuffed animals retrieved from the wreckage, shared the haunting moment when he found his daughters amidst the debris.
Law enforcement officials stated the pursuit began when deputies noticed suspicious activity and attempted to investigate. However, as soon as the pursuit of Canales began, it ended tragically three streets away.
Eliza was a recent Fresno High School graduate, while Mang was juggling nursing school and providing financial support for her family. Both young women had promising futures ahead of them.
Canales fled the scene post-crash but was soon apprehended and taken into custody. Sheriff’s officials underscored that this tragedy could have been avoided with cooperation on Canales’ part.
The incident has left the Yang family not only emotionally shattered but also homeless. Days later, they are still reeling from the damage to their home, which is currently uninhabitable.
As the family navigates this profound loss, they have started a GoFundMe to gather financial support for funeral costs and home repairs. Ronald Yang is seeking community assistance and appealing for donations to help the family recover from this catastrophe.
