Surveillance video showed two people dressed as construction workers entering and leaving the Magazine Street bank within about a minute.
NEW ORLEANS, LA — Federal authorities are investigating a Friday morning bank robbery in Uptown New Orleans after two people believed to be connected to the crime were seen dressed as construction workers, according to local reporting and surveillance video provided by a nearby business.
The robbery was reported Aug. 7 at the Home Bank branch in the 5400 block of Magazine Street. The FBI confirmed that it is investigating the case but had not publicly released details about possible suspects, how the robbery was carried out or how much money may have been taken. No arrests had been announced.
Sources familiar with the investigation told WDSU that the people believed to be involved were dressed as construction workers. Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed two people wearing work-style clothing entering the bank around the time of the robbery. The same two people were seen leaving roughly a minute later.
Several business owners in the area said police approached them seeking surveillance video after the robbery. The effort could give investigators footage from businesses along Magazine Street before and after the two people were recorded entering the bank. Authorities have not publicly said whether investigators have identified a vehicle or established where the pair went after leaving the branch.
The bank is at 5435 Magazine Street in a busy commercial section of Uptown. New Orleans police initially responded to the robbery, according to local reports, while the FBI took the lead in the federal investigation. The FBI routinely investigates robberies involving federally insured financial institutions.
Investigators had released few details about what happened inside the bank as of Sunday. Authorities had not said whether a weapon was displayed, whether a written demand was presented to an employee or whether anyone was injured. The amount of money taken, if any, also had not been publicly disclosed.
The Magazine Street branch has been robbed before. In December 2019, Joseph Herbert Barlow Jr. robbed a Home Bank on Magazine Street and stole about $6,676, according to federal court records summarized by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Barlow later pleaded guilty to federal bank robbery and was sentenced in 2021 to 60 months in prison. Authorities have announced no connection between that case and Friday’s robbery.
The FBI has not publicly identified the two people seen in the recent surveillance footage or announced charges in the case. The investigation remained active as authorities reviewed evidence and sought additional information about the robbery.
