CHICAGO, IL – In an unfortunate early morning incident in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, two women were tragically killed and three children critically injured in a mass shooting. The occurrence took place around 6:15 a.m. in the South Woodlawn Avenue’s 7100 block, as per reports from the Chicago Police Department.
As per initial reports, multiple individuals alighted from two cars and began firing toward a residence. A woman aged 42 was declared dead at the site, while another aged 22 expired after being transported to the University of Chicago Hospital. Alongside the women, three boys – aged 5, 7, and 8, were reported severely wounded and are in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital.
Despite this being the preliminary stage of their investigation, the police suspect that the shooting was the unfortunate climax of a personal dispute. Shell casings found at the scene have been traced back to a rifle and a handgun. As of now, no descriptions of the perpetrators or their vehicles have been released.
Ald. Desmon Yancy (5th) commented on the incident, saying, “The summer is just getting started, and I don’t want to stand in front of a group of microphones and have another discussion about the pain that [violence] is causing our communities.”
Area One detectives are actively looking into the matter, and Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood encouraged witnesses with any information that could lead to the apprehension of the culprits to step forward.
