Uber driver charged after shooting teenage girl outside Waffle House

DUNWOODY, GA – A late-night altercation in a parking lot has left one teenager in critical condition and an Uber driver facing aggravated assault charges. The incident unfolded early Sunday morning at a Waffle House on Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

According to police, the situation escalated when a group of teenage girls ordered an Uber to take them home around 2:30 a.m. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Meredith Grundy, arrived but realized his vehicle could not accommodate all five passengers safely.

Grundy informed the teenagers about the seating limitations, which reportedly sparked a heated argument. The girls allegedly became combative, with one reportedly slapping Grundy and threatening him.

In response to the alleged threat, Grundy retrieved a firearm and discharged it, striking one of the teenagers in the back and legs, authorities said. The injured teen was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she remains in critical condition.

Uber confirmed Grundy was a driver for the company and has since revoked his access to the platform. The company described the details of the incident as “horrifying” and expressed readiness to cooperate with law enforcement.

Grundy is currently held at the DeKalb County Jail. Court records indicate he has not yet secured legal representation. Efforts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful.

The family of the injured teenager has declined to speak about the incident. Police have not disclosed whether the teen could face charges related to the confrontation.

Authorities emphasize the importance of de-escalation in such situations, noting that the outcome could have been different had cooler heads prevailed.
