HALIFAX, CANADA – A chilling tragedy unfolded in Halifax when a 19-year-old Walmart employee’s life was cut short after she was discovered deceased in a walk-in oven by her own mother who works at the same store. Identified as Gursimran Kaur, the young woman’s story has sparked community support amid a family devastated by the loss.
On the evening of October 19, police rushed to the Walmart located on Mumford Road. Inside, near the bakery department, they found Kaur’s body in the large walk-in oven. The unexpected discovery has left unanswered questions, with police failing to reach a conclusion on the cause of death, leaving the investigation open.
Kaur and her mother shared shifts at the Walmart store for the past two years. That unfortunate night, Kaur’s mother became anxious after realizing her daughter was missing for an hour. Despite efforts to reach Kaur through calls, her mother was left with the unimaginable task of discovering her daughter’s fate.
Originally from India, Kaur’s family has found themselves separated during this crisis. Her father and brother stay in India while attempts are in progress to bring them to Canada, coordinated by the Maritime Sikh Society. It’s this society that instigated a community-driven fundraiser, now surpassing 75,000 Canadian dollars, intended to aid the grieving family.
In response to the incident, Walmart has suspended store operations indefinitely and imposed a pause on area equipment usage, following the directive of the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration.
Walmart expressed heartfelt condolences to Kaur’s family, underscoring their priority on offering support to their employees during this distressing period.
