Police say the man pointed a loaded shotgun toward officers after they tried less-lethal rounds and repeatedly ordered him to surrender.
SAN ANTONIO, TX — New witness video shows the tense moments leading up to a West Side shooting in which 10 San Antonio police officers opened fire on a man who authorities say pointed a loaded shotgun toward them Friday night.
The shooting happened Sept. 25 near Ruiz and San Marcos streets, just west of downtown San Antonio. Police Chief Jesse Salame said officers encountered the man after responding to a report of an armed person at a nearby convenience store. The man, described by police as being in his 30s, was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital in critical condition. His identity had not been publicly released as of the latest reports.
Video provided by a witness offers another view of the encounter as investigators work to establish a complete timeline of what happened. Police said officers were initially sent to the 500 block of Ruiz Street after receiving a report of a man with a gun at the Pik Nik Foods convenience store. Officers later located a man matching the circumstances of the call a short distance away in the parking lot of the Kozy Korner Saloon near Ruiz and San Marcos streets.
Salame said the man was carrying a duffel bag and moving between vehicles in the parking lot. Officers believed they could see what appeared to be a firearm inside the bag. Police repeatedly ordered the man to put down the bag and surrender, according to the chief. Officers also used less-lethal beanbag rounds during their attempts to take him into custody.
According to the police account, the man eventually stepped out from behind a vehicle, manipulated a shotgun and pointed it toward officers. At least 10 officers then fired their weapons, striking him multiple times. Police said a shotgun was recovered next to the man after the gunfire ended. No officers were injured, and authorities reported no other injuries at the scene.
Investigators had not determined whether the man fired the shotgun, Salame said in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Authorities also had not announced how many rounds the officers fired or precisely how many times the man was struck. Those details are among the questions investigators are expected to examine through witness accounts, physical evidence and available video.
Several witnesses were taken to provide statements after the shooting. Investigators were also reviewing surveillance footage from businesses and other cameras in the area. The newly surfaced witness video adds another piece of visual evidence, but it does not by itself resolve all questions about the confrontation. Police have said their investigation remains underway.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m., according to local reports. The incident drew a large police response to the area around the bar and convenience store as officers secured the scene and investigators began collecting evidence. The man was taken to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery, authorities said.
SAPD’s investigative units are reviewing the officers’ use of force and the circumstances that led to the shooting. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office also reviews officer-involved shootings. Police had not publicly identified the 10 officers who fired their weapons or released the wounded man’s name in the latest reports reviewed Sunday.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have said additional evidence will be examined as they determine the full sequence of events, including whether the shotgun was fired. No criminal finding or final administrative determination regarding the officers’ actions had been announced.
