Madeline Haner faces charges in Oklahoma and a Florida warrant after authorities said explosives were found in her vehicle and Crestview home.
CRESTVIEW, FL — A 24-year-old Crestview woman faces criminal allegations in two states after Oklahoma troopers stopped her vehicle and authorities said they found a live homemade explosive device and several firearms among her belongings.
Madeline Haner was stopped by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol on Aug. 25 while traveling through Sequoyah County, according to reports citing law enforcement. She was arrested on Oklahoma charges that include unlawful possession of an explosive and use of a firearm while committing a felony. Authorities said she was being held without bond.
The arrest also brought renewed attention to an investigation in Okaloosa County, Florida, where the Sheriff’s Office has an active warrant for Haner. Authorities say the Florida warrant accuses her of manufacturing an explosive device with intent to cause harm or death, a second-degree felony. A hold has been placed on her in connection with the Florida case.
The allegations stem in part from an Aug. 8 search of a residence on Alabama Street in Crestview. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found live homemade explosive devices inside the home while executing warrants connected to Haner’s husband, 29-year-old Antonio Austin Haner.
The Aug. 8 operation developed into a lengthy armed confrontation. The Sheriff’s Office said deputies had gone to the residence to serve Antonio Haner with a search warrant, an arrest warrant and a risk protection order following a series of incidents near Richbourg School. Deputies had obtained warrants after a teacher reported seeing a man matching his description carrying a long gun near the residence and later hearing a gunshot.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies repeatedly tried to get Antonio Haner to surrender before he fired from inside the residence toward law enforcement personnel positioned in armored vehicles. Authorities said he later fired additional rounds using a shotgun and rifle. No deputies were reported injured.
Antonio Haner died during the confrontation. The Sheriff’s Office later said deputies did not fire their weapons during the standoff and released additional information about firearms and homemade explosive devices found at the property. The circumstances of his death were referred for an independent investigation following the incident.
Authorities have not publicly established in the reports reviewed how the explosive allegedly found in Madeline Haner’s vehicle was made, what she intended to do with it or where she was ultimately traveling. No motive for transporting the device has been publicly confirmed. The criminal allegations against her have not been proven in court.
Haner remained in Oklahoma custody as authorities pursued the charges there and the outstanding Okaloosa County warrant. Information about when she might be returned to Florida or her next court appearance was not immediately available in the reviewed reports.
