NEW YORK, NY – An 81-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident near her Upper East Side home on Monday, days before her birthday. Akiko Omi became the victim of a fatal collision when a truck struck her on 59th Street and Second Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. The driver did not stop to help her after crashing into her.
The heartbreaking news reached Yasuko Gerson, Omi’s sister, who had spent Sunday evening dining with her. Unable to grasp the sudden loss of her sister, Yasuko recalled the distressing message from her doorman, who informed her of the accident.
Emergency responders transported Omi to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where her injuries proved fatal. Yasuko, still in shock, shared her disbelief and sorrow at the sudden loss, having visited Omi in the hospital for what would be the last time.
Omi, who used a cane when walking, reportedly stumbled off the sidewalk and into traffic, where the truck hit her. The driver, operating a 2023 Ford Transit Connect, continued across the Queensboro Bridge without stopping.
Authorities are actively searching for the driver involved in the collision. Yasuko, burdened by grief, expressed disbelief that the driver could be unaware of the incident.
The bond between the sisters was profound, with Yasuko struggling to come to terms with life without her sister by her side. Her emotional turmoil underscores the enduring companionship they shared.
The police continue to investigate the case, as the family mourns this unexpected and devastating loss, hoping for justice for Omi.
