Police are reviewing surveillance video showing a man with a gun shortly before the couple was shot outside their home.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 61-year-old woman was killed and her 67-year-old husband was wounded after gunfire erupted as the couple sat outside their North Philadelphia home late Sunday, authorities said.
Philadelphia police identified the woman as Michelle Wilson. Officers were called to the 2800 block of North 24th Street at about 11:49 p.m. Sunday for a report of a person with a gun. Wilson and her husband were found wounded on or near the porch and were taken to Temple University Hospital. Wilson was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Monday.
Wilson’s husband, identified in local reporting as Evans Tyree Wilson Jr., was hospitalized after being shot. Later reports from several Philadelphia news organizations said he was in stable condition. Early reports had described his condition as critical.
Investigators recovered about 20 spent shell casings from the area around the porch, steps, sidewalk and street, according to police accounts. No firearm was recovered, and authorities said Monday that no arrests had been made.
Police were also examining surveillance footage from the neighborhood as they worked to identify whoever was responsible. Video obtained by several local television stations showed a masked man walking toward the area shortly before the shooting. The man appeared to be carrying a handgun and placing it inside his coat.
Investigators had not determined whether Wilson and her husband were deliberately targeted or were struck by gunfire intended for someone else. Police Inspector D.F. Pace said authorities did not yet have a confirmed motive and were reviewing what happened immediately before the shooting for clues about who opened fire and why.
Friends and neighbors described the Wilsons as longtime members of the neighborhood who had recently started a food truck business. Aaron Lively, a friend of the couple, told local reporters that they were hardworking people who were trying to earn a living selling food. He described Michelle Wilson as a good neighbor who was willing to help others.
The shooting drew attention from city officials as detectives continued searching for a suspect. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, speaking Monday at an unrelated news conference, said shootings involving residents going about their daily lives can have a wider effect on neighborhoods by making people feel unsafe in their own communities.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating. As of early Tuesday, authorities had announced no arrest and had not publicly identified a suspect or established a motive for the shooting.
