HOUSTON, TX – A family is seeking justice after a hit-and-run incident claimed the life of their loved one. Houston police have located the suspect’s vehicle, but the driver remains at large.
The tragic event occurred last week on Richmond Avenue near Montrose Boulevard. A grandmother, identified as 50-year-old Darla Wiley, was struck and killed while walking in the area. The driver fled the scene, leaving Wiley’s family devastated.
Darla was just two weeks shy of her 51st birthday when the incident happened around 8 p.m. last Thursday. Her sister, Julia Wiley, who resides in New York, expressed the family’s anguish. Despite being estranged due to Darla’s mental health struggles, they remained concerned for her well-being.
Julia emphasized the tragedy of losing Darla in such a manner, highlighting that she was not just a victim but a beloved family member with children and grandchildren. “She had family, she had children, she had grandbabies,” Julia shared.
Houston Police Department investigators found a blue Mercedes-Benz, believed to be involved in the crash, in a parking lot approximately two miles from the scene. However, the driver has yet to be apprehended.
Julia urged the driver to come forward, understanding that fear might have initially driven their actions. “We need to know what happened. Why would you just not stop?” she questioned.
The family has initiated an online fundraiser to help bring Darla’s body back home. They plan to hold a memorial ceremony on her birthday next Thursday, two weeks after her passing.
The area where the accident occurred lacks a dedicated crosswalk, adding to the danger for pedestrians. Police have identified a potential lead on the driver, who faces charges of failing to stop and render aid.
